If you’re on the go during a lunch break, or looking to eat somewhere for an adorable brunch date, head here! From what I’ve observed, lots of people run in and out of this place; few sit down to eat. They’ve got lots of coffee drinks (lattes, café au lait, french press, macchiatos), as well as gourmet breakfast bagels!
I’ve been here twice so far, once with my friend Josh and once with my friend Bryant.
I ordered the Adult Grilled Cheese ($5.95) with a side of potato salad ($1.50).
The grilled cheese was soft, melty swiss and cheddar in between crispy, oily bread. Highly worth the price! The tomato, shallots, and dijon makes this a go-to gourmet option for vegetarians.
The potato salad was tangy and well-seasoned, and came in a decent portion.
They offer a bunch of different drinks, including a large variety of (organic) teas and natural sodas, on top of their diverse coffee menu.
In my opinion, their salad selection is meh, so head straight for the sandwiches and paninis. Every sammie has something unique to offer, such as a pairing of goat cheese and fig, or chipotle aioli, or roasted zucchini. All of the sandwiches taste delightfully fresh, and all of the paninis come out steaming. These are the values that everyone looks for in a restaurant.
The simplified savory menu probably allows much emphasis to go to the desserts.
Definitely stop in for something sweet every time you visit, as this teeny-tiny café is known for their cakes and baked goods. Their selection is huge, with dozens of cupcakes flavors baked fresh everyday, and sweet goodies on display, like lemon bars, blondies, and scones.
They are also great for special occasions, with a huge variety of cheesecakes, pies, regular cakes, and…cupcakes.
The cupcakes are moist but smaller than I had hoped, with consistently delicious frosting. Even the gluten-free ones are quite great, though a bit more crumbly and dry than their full-gluten friends.
All of your food comes ready to go: the sandwiches are wrapped, and the sides in little paper containers. They’ll carefully pack any cupcakes you order in cute little boxes so that they don’t wobble around too much. I love that they put so much care into that; other places might just chuck the cupcake into a box, but nah. The Sugar Shack’s boxes come with little divots designed to keep your cupcakes sturdy. Love that.
Anything that you order will be ready in less than ten minutes, provided that the café isn’t super busy, which generally never is. I don’t understand. I’ve been twice during lunch hour on a weekday, and there’s never a huge crowd. The workers are good-natured, you sit and listen to indie pop, and the whole environment is cheery and cute, the sun streams in through the window, and the grub is inexpensive but yum. The whole place gives off a counter-culturish vibe.
The serving portions are more than enough to satisfy your lunch cravings or provide for a light dinner, and for the price they are offered at, I’m not complaining!
Best of all, Sugar Shack can be found in arguably my favorite living community in all of Atlanta, BROOKHAVEN!
